Last Friday I was having trouble configuring an Alpha 2100 OSF/1 v3.0 server
to work with netgroups in the /etc/hosts.equiv file and was also wondering
whether the /etc/hosts.lpd accepted the same format as the hosts.equiv
(including netgroups).
I received several replies stating that netgroups
in the hosts.equiv have been working since v2.0. The problem as suggested
by Matthew Harrell <harrell_at_asuap3.nrl.navy.mil> was to ensure that the
primary host name matches the entry in the netgroup exactly. The trick
is that an unqualified host name [foo] and a fully qualified domain name
[foo.domain] aren't equivalent. My problem was that between looking up
host names in the server's local /etc/hosts, DNS, and NIS I was getting a
mix of host names and fully qualified domain names.
In regard to the query on the format of hosts.lpd I received one reply stating
that it is in the same format as hosts.equiv and thus should accept netgroups,
however I received several other replies stating that only host names are
accepted. I couldn't get printing to work with netgroups so I'm assuming that
only simple host names are allowed.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply:
