Can you 'restore' "/x/y/z to /newroot/x/y/z ?

Hopefully the subject described what I need.

I did a dump of a filesystem, hypothetically called /x, to
tape. Now, I want to restore a chunk of it, specifically
/x/y/z where z is a file, but I want to restore it in such
a way that I can not have it overwrite the existing /x/y/z
in my system.

Is there a way to specify a new "root" area, say /var/tmp,
so that restore will pull /x/y/z off of tape, and put it into
/var/tmp/x/y/z?

Thanks much,
Russ Fink
