Sony SMO-F521 optical drive on DEC 3000/400

  I'm trying to connect a Sony SMO-F521 optical drive to our DEC 3000/400
running OSF/1 v3.0. The machine sees the optical drive, but strangely
gives a device name of JKBxx in response to the SHOW DEV command.
The other hard disks come as DKBxx devices (on the external SCSI bus).
  The system doesn't see the device during the boot. Any ideas how
to get the OSF/1 system to recognize/deal with a JKB device?
