TeX/LaTeX distribution- where is it?

I'm trying to get the TeX/LaTeX/etc tools online, but I'm having a very
hard time finding a simple distribution of the source. All I've found is
several sites with TONS of files and directories, but nowhere is there
a "normal" distribution (e.g. a tar(5) file that you unpack and build).

Is there such a beast, or does one have to spend hours manually downloading
the files, and put everything together??
