The answer is that the /proc filesystem must be mounted before the
procfs option will work. To do this one needs a line like the
following in /etc/fstab:

/proc /proc procfs rw 0 0

This seems to have fixed the error which we were receiving.

My original question was:

>>We have a program called "trace" which came with the TCL distribution.
>>When we invoke it, we are receiving the following message:
>>
>>gamma.cs.wright.edu> trace df
>>df
>>Tracing process /proc/30838
>>/proc/30838: No such file or directory
>>
>>I have perused the archives and the FAQ without success. I rebuilt the
>>kernel with options PROCFS, made /dev/trace, and still am not having
>>success with this command. Unfortunately, my paper documents are not
>>the most recent. We are running OSF/1 version 3.0 on an AXP 4610.
>>Any pointers will be much appreciated.
