.forward file - works for some, not for others

I feel a bit silly here, as this seems so trivial, but I've come to a bit of an
impasse. I have three presumably identical alpha workstations all running OSF/1
2.0. On two of those workstations I can't get a .forward file to work at all,
whether it's forwarding the mail to another machine, or piping it to a program
or file, the mail goes into the mail spool instead. On the third workstation,
using the same exact .forward file, it works just fine - as expected. The
servers running various versions of OSF/1 that we have all use .forward files
correctly. This is the first time I've ever had this problem on a Unix box and
was quite surprised by it.

I couldn't find anything on this in the archives. Has anybody seen this problem
before and is there a solution?

Cheers,

Dan Jacobson
