Thanks to everyone who replied:

The good news for the future is that, as Paul E. Rockwell put it:
DEC OSF/1 version 3.2 will ship with NetWorker SingleServer -
a stripped down version of PolyCenter NetWorker Save and Restore that will
allow it to back up the system that it's running on. Your license to
use this product is included with your OSF-BASE license t. - that is it's
usable at no extra cost to you.
NetWorker has a complete GUI interface, and features such as unattended backup,
GUI-Based restore, media management, and is upgradeable to the full, network-
based NetWorker server product with just a license purchase. So you can start
with backing up a single system, then turn it into a backup server, able to
backup systems (Digital and non-Digital UNIX systems, PC's, NetWare servers)
attached to your network.
Jan Mark Holzer added:
with OSF/1 V3.2 you'll get a FREE X front end for backups,
volume management and restores !!
This X based (and CC) front end is a NetWorker Save and Restore
(aka DECnsr) single server which allows you to backup your local
system using most features of the full NetWorker software .
For pre V3.2 systems I'm not aware of any X based backups tools
there exists a CC (and cron) based tool called amanda which
might be worth exploring on the other hand it shouldn't be
too dificult to hack up something using Tk/TCL/Perl for this
task .
But if you can wait until V3.2 (should be shipping any week now)
it would be definately worth using the NetWorker single server.
We estimate we'll be getting our upgrade CDROMS in a couple of months,
based on past experinence of the time lag. That's too long to go without
backing up ;-), so we're going to go with the amanda package in the
meantime. Amanda comes from ftp.cs.umd.edu: pub/amanda.
Finally, Carlos Godinez told me:
I used for some time the Xdesktop from IXI on my ALPHAstation and it
worked great not only for managing backups but to use UNIX like a MAC. I
remember that the license use to be free at that time for AXP Workstations and
the binaries came with the Layer Products CD for DEC OSF/1.
This I haven't checked out at all.
