My original question:

> Has anybody gotten the NCD Network Audo System (NAS) to work under OSF?

Thanks to Garrett T. Van Siclen <gvs_at_Jaxom.Eng.PKO.DEC.Com> who pointed
out that every DEC OSF/1 workstation ships with a runtime environment
for DEC's Multimedia Services.

Unfortunately, this is not what I needed.

I also received the following note from Rob Lembree <lembree_at_zk3.dec.com>:

NAS has not been ported to DEC OSF/1 for a couple of reasons. The
first is that AF runs on DEC OSF/1. AF and NAS are technical competitors,
with AF having been developed by Tom Levergood at Digital's Cambridge
Research Lab and NAS developed by Jim Fulton at NCD. AF's been ported to
SPARC running SunOS, Indigo, Ultrix, DEC OSF/1, and Tektronix X Terminals,
where it's part of the product. Here's a URL for AF:

        http://www.research.digital.com/CRL/projects/AF/

Secondly, there's a project afoot at the X Consortium to merge AF
and NAS into one standard called CommonAudio. Jim Fulton and Tom Levergood
agreed on the best features of both, and the Consortium's using this to
generate a standard network transparent audio system. Digital's active in
the effort.

So, that's why NAS hasn't been ported. If you have additional questions,
don't hesitate to send me mail.

Regards,
Rob Lembree

I guess that settles it. Many thanks to Rob. I am sure we all look
forward to platform-independent solutions.
