SUMMARY: Changing Hostname

First off, Thanks to the 18 individuals who replied - all of which very
promptly, I might add.

The original question was basically how does one go about changing the hostname
of a machine once it is set initially.

It seems there are a variety of ways to do this and I will do my best to
summarize the methods used by those who responded.

Method 1: Simply use the System Setup utility found under the Applications
menu of the Session Manager when logged in as root (or simply run
/usr/sbin/netsetup) and re-configure the ln0 interface.

Method 2: Manually change the hostname in the /etc/rc.config file and reboot.

Others mentioned that you might want to change the names of and edit the
contents of the file /sys/conf/HOSTNAME and the directory /sys/HOSTNAME. It
was unclear whether Method 1 will do this automatically or not - in either
case, it is unlikely that the old files/directories will be deleted, just new
ones created.

For both methods, you need to then make sure the file /etc/hosts is updated
to reflect the new name.

It was also pointed out that if there are other machines that are mounted
to the machine that is changing its name, they will potentially need to have
the following files updated:
/etc/hosts
/etc/fstab
/etc/exports

It was also sugguested to do a "grep -i old_name" in the /etc directory.
Update anyfiles with the old name in it.

Don't forget that in order for the rest of the world to access your machine
with the new name, you must have it registered with the Domain Name Server or
whatever you use for your computer's domain.

Winston Brown (a08696_at_mailgate.wpl.com) reports that /usr/sbin/netsetup will
do everything you need as they perform this operation frequently - naming all
new computers as "unix1" and then moving them into place and renaming them.

I do not guarantee that I completely summarized all the replies - if you want
a personal copy of the all the replies, simply make a request to me and I'll
mail it to you.
