Attaching a HP Deskjet 560C to a DEC3000...

I am trying to connect a HP Deskjet 560C to the
serial port of a DEC3000 and I cannot
make the port use RTS/CTS flow control.
( The printer has only a parallel port and I use
  a serial to parallel converter )
The cable I use has the following wires connected:
HOST PRINTER
 2 -> 3
 3 <- 2
 4 -> 5
 5 <- 4
 7 -- 7

When the printer buffer is full the printer sets then pin 5
which is the CTS for the HOST.
But HOST still transmits....

Any ideas for the problem ???

( I have also tried several other types of serial line connections
  without success...)
