I've been bashing my head against various things (notably the wall) trying
to figure this out, so any pointers would be appreciated :)
Here at 807-CITY, we are providing both dialin and telnet-in services for
the 1995 Nordics World Ski Championships, as well as the standard gopher+WWW
servers.
The problem is simple: we need to display a message before people log in,
telling them to "Login as new to create an account" as well as other
appropriate messages. /etc/motd is great for saying things like this AFTER
people have logged in, but it just doesn't do the job for us here :)
Some operating systems (ie. Linux) allow you to create a file called
/etc/issue which is displayed before login.
I've managed to port the telnetd from FreeBSD to our OSF/1 machine, and that
seems to be working fine, displaying /etc/issue. However, I'm having
trouble doing the same thing with FreeBSD's getty program, and am looking
for an easier solution. I can make a minimal (128-char) message by editing
/etc/gettydefs, but that's pretty pathetic.
Anyone have any ideas? This is OSF/1 1.3.
I will, of course, summarize.
BTW, anyone who wants the patches to FreeBSD telnetd to get it working and
displaying /etc/issue under OSF/1 is welcome to them: just e-mail me.
Thanks!
