NIS - DNS hostname lookup problem

Hello,
The problem being encountered is with client hostname lookups. We have
a DEC Alpha AXP running OSF/1 v3.0 configured as a NIS slave server in a multi-
platform environment. The NIS master server is a SUN SPARC and works fine. If
a client sun workstation has the DEC acting as its NIS server, a request for any
machine outside of our campus network fails. The problem seems to be that the
DEC server will only consult the NIS hosts database and possibly its local hosts
database, but fails to perform a DNS (bind) lookup.
The DEC machine itself has no problem reaching outside systems, it looks
locally first and then binds to a DNS second (if necessary). Any machine which
has the NIS master serving it works fine. I have read through and searched
documentation in both the DEC and SUN NIS manuals and on-line help and have had
no success. The hosts database is compiled on the master server with the -b
option set in the NIS Makefile. The -b flag is supposed to signal the NIS server to
use the DNS, when it cannot find a hostname in the hosts map, and pass that onto
the client. It would appear that the DEC server does not interpret the map flag
(however that is represetned in the map) which would tell it to perform a DNS lookup.
There may be a minor setup change required somewhere on the DEC, but this change
remains obscure.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated!

Thank You,
