My original question dealt with a bug in gawk, version 2.14, patchlevel 1
under OSF/1 version 3.2. Many folks responded with the fact that there is
indeed a much more recent version (2.15.6) available via ftp at
gatekeeper.dec.com, prep.ai.mit.edu, aeneas.mit.edu and other mirror sites.
Didier Wagenknecht was kind enough to test it using version 2.15.6 and it
appears to work.
Other folks suggested nawk, and also provided some workarounds. While these
work, I am trying to avoid having to change our scripts.
I will obtain the latest version of gawk and see if it solves my problem.
