xdm problems after upgrading from 3.0B to 3.2

Hi!
I've just upgraded an AlphaServer 1000 4/200 from OSF/1 3.0B to
3.2 (214). After the upgrade, the system didn't start with xdm/the
GUI logon.

In 3.0B, I had to add the line

controller vga0 at * slot ? vector vgaintr

to the configuration file and rebuild the kernel. If I do that
now, the system panics at boot time after running all the scripts
in rc3.d (can it be xdm that crashes?):

trap: invalid memory read access from kernel mode
  ...
panic (cpu 0): kernel memory fault

The installupdate didn't report any particular problems. I'm
using the builtin VGA adapter. I didn't see anything related to
this in the release notes or installation guide.

When I remove the controller vga line above, the system boots
fine and seems to work normally.

Any pointers to relevant docs, and/or suggestions for what
to change or look for?

Thanks,
Terje Sten
