Hi,

I've been trying to connect an HP LaserJet 4 printer to a DEC 3000/300
through the serial port (/dev/tty00). I've tried the methods discussed
in this list and tried different filters. Only the ln03of filter allows
me to print plain text files, but the filter doesn't support PostScript
and it inserts the extra characters "66t" at beginning of each page printed.
All the other filters I tried including ln03rof either does nothing or
causes a "22 Error" on the printer (wrong pacing according to the printer's
manual). Here are the setup on the computer and the printer.

Computer: DEC 3000/300 OSF/1 3.2; serial port /dev/tty00; and the
          /etc/printcap entry:

6|lp1|lp6:\
        :af=/usr/adm/lp1acct:\
        :br#19200:\
        :ct=dev:\
        :fc#0177777:\
        :fs#03:\
        :if=/usr/lbin/ln03rof:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lp1err:\
        :lp=/dev/tty00:\
        :mx#0:\
        :of=/usr/lbin/ln03rof:\
        :pl#66:\
        :pw#80:\
        :rw:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/lp6:\
        :xc#0177777:\
        :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:\
        :xs#044000:\
        :ps=PS:

Printer: HP LaserJet 4 (with PostScript installed); serial port; and

        RS-422
        DTR/DSR
        19200

and JOB|PERSONALITY is set to AUTO.

I tried (RS-232 XON/XOFF 19200), (RS-232 DTR/DSR 19200), and the printer
didn't do anything. When I used (RS-422 XON/XOFF 19200), the printer gave
a "40 Error" (Baud rate or parity is not the same as the computer's according
to the printer's manual).

My questions are

1. Did I miss something here? What other things can I try?

2. The 3000/300's serial port is supposed to be RS-232. How come that I
was able to print something with the ln03of filter when the printer was
set to RS-422, while the printer didn't do anything when the printer
   was set to RS-232?

3. With the ln03of filter, I tried setting up remote printing on another
3000/300 by including this /etc/printcap entry:

lp1|1|lp6:\
        :lf=\usr\adm\lp1err:\
        :lp=:\
:rm=name of the machine that has the printer physically connected
        :rp=lp6:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/lp6:

But it won't print anything. The print log file on the 3000/300 with
the printer connected repeats the error "does not have access to remote
printer lp6". What should I set up to enable the access?

Thank you very much in advance.
