Hello fellow OSF Managers,
We just took delivery of an AlphaServer 1000/200 pre-loaded with OSF/1 3.0
(why they didn't load 3.2, I don't know).
This unit was ordered without DEC's optional monitor and that is costing us
more in time than if we had paid their (rather much higher) price for
including it!
The unit arrived unable to display anything on a VGA monitor attached to the
standard (not high-performance) graphics card socket.
After spending some time reading through all the 'introductory' guides we
found that there was an option to view output via the COM port. Then we
found there was a 'set console graphics' console command... which had no
effect. Eventually we learned from DEC support that there is a jumper (#27)
on the motherboard to enable the VGA graphics card. (Why the standard user
documentation didn't mention this, I don't know... it's in the technical
guide which our local DEC equipment support person had not yet received.)
After setting the jumper I find that I get a proper X-window display with
genvmunix, but not with 'vmunix'. DEC support said to run 'doconfig' which I
did, but all I can get is something which calls itself the 'generic console'
and doesn't even support page pauses with 'more', let alone X-windows.
I guess I need to copy a 'controller ... vga ... ' line from GENERIC, but I
don't know the correct scsi address or card number to include. Perhaps there
is an 'options' setting instead?
If anyone has such an entry in their /sys/conf/<SYSTEM> I'd like to try it.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers,
-Philip
