Perl5.001 dumps core under OSF/1 v3.2

I'm keen to get perl5.001 running under OSF/1 v3.2

It doesn't seem to matter whether I use the native CC or GCC v2.6.3,
whether I use the built-in dec_osf1 hints or try things like not having
shared libraries or dynamic libraries, or even whether I use the built-in
malloc() or the system one, the problem is that perl compiles OK and passes
the test scripts, even runs most of the old perl scripts I've tried it on,
but on trying to make the perlref stuff I get core dumps:

        # make all
        perl ./parr.pl -a4 -bookorder -verbose refbase.ps > refguide.ps
sh: 15015 Memory fault - core dumped
        *** Exit 139
        Stop.

I've not yet tried tracing parr.pl or perl yet. The osf-managers archives
at Stanford don't have any hints for perl5 under OSF/1 and I can't believe
that I'm the first to strike this problem. Heck, even a VAX here running
perl4 can run this job!

Would anyone using perl5.001 under OSF/1 who *can* process the perlref
stuff successfully please let me know how they configured perl?
I would gladly summarise.

With thanks in anticipation,
Alex.
