SUMMARY: Audio on Alpha Station 200's?

Following are the replies that I have gotten so far on my question about audio
on the Alpha Station 200 series machines. From my own experience, I tried
installing the Multi-Media Services from the December 1994 Layered products CD.
I choose the Microsoft soundboard option. I got through most of the install just
fine, but when the install process tried to verify the startup scripts it hung
the machine. I also allowed the install to rebuild the kernel, which I then
installed. When the audio server tried to start it once again hung the machine.
After reading the SPD for the Multi-Media services, DECTalk and DECSpin, I found
no mention of the Alpha Station 200/400 series. Nor did I find any mention of
the software running on a PCI buss based machine, which the A.S. 200 4/133 is.
Guess it is bac to the drawing board on this one. If anyone has any luck in
getting this work, please let me know.
                Thanks in advance
                     George.

You need to install the run-time MultiMedia Services for OSF (MMERTxxx).
You should have a license included for that (I think v1.4 is current).

DECSpin is for video conferencing and DECTalk is for converting text to
speech. MME is what you need for playing sound and video files.

Audiofile works fine if you use the Microsoft Sound Board server,
Amsb.

Well, I don't know if my answer really concerns your question. I received
a Alpha Station 400 with a built in J300 Multimedia board. I strongly
suppose, that your Stations have the same board built in.

With my Station, I got also the Software License for the Multimedia Services.
If I want to play sound............, I use the audioplay, audiorecord,
videoodyssey, mpegplay ..... in the /bin/mme directory.

I do not remember if they were installed or if they came with the
setld of the Multimedia tools.

get the most recent version of AudioFile from crl.dec.com and use the
Amsb device.

I got the multimedia tools from the Software Product Library CD
shipped with OSF Ver 3.2 . They are dated December 1994. the multimedia tools
are on the 2nd CD in the /mme140 directory.
They are supporting the Microsoft Sound board that I have in the 400 Station.
Hope, that it's the same on the 200 Series.

Yesterday I unpacked our first Alpha Station 200 4/166 and set it up
for mbone.

It had factory installed OSF1 3.2A on it. After configuring that in
the normal way I logged in and read /var/adm/messages. There I noticed it
had a Microsoft sound board, so I typed `Amsb'. I then typed `arecord >a.a'
and recorded myself saying hello, then typed `aplay a.a'. It played it back.

Then I mounted a disk from another local machine whick I knew to
have sb, vat, nv and so on for the mbone on it and that all worked too
(after I had set up a tunnel to the subnet).

They have a Microsoft Sound Board.

We had no problem with running AF3R1 patch 8 on it (Amsb). Newer
version (our is from July, 1994) ought to work.

We're using Multimedia Services 1.4 on it (older version ought to
work, MSB have been supported a long time).
