Default Character Set in OSF/1?

Hi there,

We are currently developing a software product that receives its input
from electronic mail. Essentially a daemon reads the received mail and
parses it appropriately however we seem to be having problems with
good-old 8-bit characters in mail messages. Mail that is received has
been sent in a uuencoded format and is therefore decoded before parsing
however mail transmitted from the Macintosh environment is obviously in
the Mac character set.

I understand that this character set must be converted to the
IS0-88591-1 character set for utilities like 'cat', 'more' and the like
to be able to display it correctly, or am I wrong?

I have turned on the 'O8' option in sendmail.cf and also tried this out
with non-uuencoded input and sure enough sendmail passes the mail on
properly. Is there a tool out there that will automatically do character
set translations using tables etc.?

The behaviour we see when the file is not translated from Mac to ISO is
different on Ultrix, HP/UX and SunOS when compared to OSF/1 - any ideas?

Cheers
Ben
