We have just upgraded our two Alpha 3000/400 to v3.2a to prepare the
way for the departmental upgrades during the summer.
The machines have 32 Mbytes of memory and we have done straight forward
installation, the only changes made were to move swap to lazy mode and
set ubc_maxpercent to 35. We have two swap areas on each machine
128Mbytes in total.
Yet while login on the console from hitting return on password to
receiving prompt on 2 dxterms takes about 25secs. Remote login from
Xterminal takes 54secs! And that is when the machines are idle.
If the machines are loaded, we ran a kernel build in the background,
the remote login takes 1min.54secs!!!
These figures improve dramatically if we add 16Mbytes of memory.
With 48Mbytes the login tests take about 10secs flat...!!!
Does anybody has experience with v3.2a on 32Mbytes.??. Are our tests
correct..? The majority of Alphas in the College are configured
with 32Mbytes....
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jiri
