 Hello,
thanks again for all the prompt and helpful answers.

 The initial question was:

Can we expect good performance on Alphas with 32MB running OSF/1 v32.a

 Replies:

>..32MB is pretty much the bare minimum for V3.2A and earlier releases
>The good news is that the release due out this summer should have some big
>improvements in memory management that might help you out.
  Dr. Thomas P. Blinn tpb_at_zk3.dec.com

Stephen Carpenter sac_at_uvo.dec.com is also suggesting to wait for the
  summer release

>All our alphas has got at least 48Mbyte of memory since we found
>that 32Mbyte was not enough for doing any real work (mostly undergraduate
>students running matlab, maple etc.)
  Ilja Hallberg hallberg_at_e.kth.se

>It's been my experience that 32 Mbytes is insufficient for an Alpha running
>OSF/1--we started with 32 Mbytes too and things were awfully slow. Now
>we're at 64 Mbytes and things look OK.
  stam nicolis nicolis_at_celfi.phys.univ-tours.fr

>We have a mix of machines running 2.0 and 3.2 - they nearly all have 64Mb.
>The 32Mb ones are too painfully slow to be used as anything other than
>X displays with everything running remotely.
