about the who command...

Hello there:

I have a question regarding the w command (it is the who command, but
gives more information).
The thing is, when I issue the w command,
sometimes it gives me info related to what the users are doing:
Even if the user is doing nothing, i.e. if the idle column has some
value, the what column says someting like /bin/pine.

But sometimes, if I issue the w command,
only minus signs "-" appear in the what column!

What is happening? This occurrs randomly.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.
I swear i have not tinkered with any value anywhere.

By the way, I am using OSF/1 v3.0

thanks in advance..
