Changing Xwindow plane depth

Greetings:

We have a user here equiped with a Mid 3D Graphics TURBOchannel Module
(a 3d graphics board) which enables him to run in 24 bit color.
He now has need to run in 8 bit mode and we have searched hi and low for
how to switch between the modes with no success so far. We did find
in the man pages for xrdb that there are symbols that can be set
(for example in the RESOURCE_MANAGER property, a PLANES option) but
we are as yet unable to figure out where (ie what file) one sets these
options and what procedures are necessary to change the Xwindow plane depth.
Any help or pointers would be most appreciated.
