    Thanks to all who responded.

    My first question:
>> Is there a program available which will report what files are
open and who holds them on a given file system?... <<

The overwhelming response was to use lsof (LiSt Open Files) by Vic
Abell. There are several ftp sites listed for this:
                ftp://vic.cc.purdue.edu/pub/tools/unix/lsof (home)
                ftp://ftp.uws.edu.au/pub/unix/security/lsof
                ftp://julian.uwo.ca/pub/unix/utilities/lsof_*.tar.gz
                ftp://ftp.cs.waikato.ac.nz/pub/packages/lsof-*.tar.gz
                ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com

One person also suggested a utility called ofiles which may or may
not have been ported to OSF/1.

I have installed lsof on both my OSF/1 and my Ultrix box.

My Second Question Dealt with utilities available for disk usage
    monitoring.

The most likely solution we will implement is to use:

                Polycenter Performance Advisor (fro Digital)

It was also suggested to use Monitor (from gatekeeper.dec.com).

iostat and fstat were also suggested.

My final question was the availability of an "internals" book for
Digital Unix. The only answer I got to this was the course book
from the Digital course "Digital UNIX Internals".
