SUMMARY: Management of many print queues

Hello all,

Many thanks to the following who responded to my original request
for VMS-style printing systems for OSF. It's all gone quiet now (!)
so I am sending a summary of what I have received...

Richard Rogers <r.m.rogers_at_staffs.ac.uk>

who suggested I look at the software on the "OpenVMS
and DEC OSF/1 Interoperability Tools" CD. I've now
done this and the software on there (supplied by
   Sector7) contains a batch/print queue system called
VX/JSP, which is part of a (very comprehensive) collection
of VMS-OSF migration tools based around an OSF implementation
of DCL. I've now contacted them (UK.sales_at_sector7.com) and
although the product does not yet support generic print/batch
queues (of which we have many) it certainly looks promising.

Knut Helleboe <Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com>

who suggested taking a look at the NQM (Network Queue Management)
system from AVS/Uniras, Denmark, which is "rather expensive but
very flexible and powerful". I will be trying to find out whether
anyone in the UK supplies/supports this.

Charlie Luce <charlie_at_eql12.caltech.edu>

who refered me to an advertisement for a system called UNISPOOL,
supplied by a Dutch company, Holland House. This is apparently a
network print management system which runs on HP-UX, OSF/1 and VMS
(among others). Again I'll be trying to find out whether anyone
   in the UK supplies/supports this.

Charles Drawdy <CEDRAWDY_at_gallua.gallaudet.edu>

who was very interested in the way we currently control print
queues on VMS!!! Well this is what the internet is for, so I've
sent some information back to him!

It does seem that there aren't a lot of printing solutions out there,
or indeed many people who have the same printing requirements, but I've
certainly got some leads now, which I will be following up. Of course
there is always the 'final' solution, which is to write a system
ourselves, but I'm not sure how my employer would take to
that one... ;-)

Thanks again,
