Thanks to all those who responded (list at end).
The problem is indeed with the SGI implementation of NFS V3. There are two
patches. #481 is available now, but may make writes even slower than V2
writes. #547 is not yet available, but is supposed to address the rest of
the problems.
The quick solution was to mount the SGI disk using V2 protocols, with
"-o nfsv2" with mount, or putting "nfsv2" in the fstab options, which is
what I've currently done.
