My Original Question:

>Do I need to set something on the system to get a standard 14 inch

I got lots of replies, most suggesting that what is required is
a SVGA monitor that supports 1024x768 at 72Hz. This was my problem.
Some other things that may contribute;
- console environmnet command "set tga_green_sync 0"
- using the '-screen 640' command qualifier for the
X Server via /usr/lib/X11/Xserver.conf.
