>Can you stripe a fileset in OSF/1 v3.2? Advfs provides striping by

>you wish to avoid the hassle of striping each file in that workspace?

The overwhelming response to this question is: use the Logical Storage
Manager (LSM). This is DEC OSF software, and the GUI is highly
recommended. License PAK required. An alternative mentioned is, of
course, RAID.

A few responses are included below, but first, many thanks to:

Global fileset striping is not built into AdvFS.
Architecturally it does not belong there I believe.
You should build your AdvFS domain on storage that's been already striped.
The tool that does that is LSM - Logical Storage Manager.
LSM gives you a lot of control over your striping - number of stripes,
stripe width etc. Also enables you to stripe disks that have been
mirrored.

On the other hand per file striping in AdvFS gives you pinpoint
accuracy of striping selected 'hot' files.
Because you do it on per file basis it has to be in the filesystem.

        tpb_at_zk3.dec.com:
LSM provides the ability to stripe an entire AdvFS volume, provided you set
up a striped LSM volume and then put the AdvFS volume/fileset on it. That's
the most straight-forward way to accomplish what you're suggesting.

        sorensen_at_det.dec.com:
To do real striping, you either need a hardware raid controller (we make
several), or some software called the Logical Storage Manager (LSM).
LSM does concatenation, shadowing, and striping. It works online, and
comes with a nice GUI. It is a layered product, and I think the cost
varies with the system you have. I believe that if you have purchased
an AlphaServer since January, it may have been included.

There are software (Logical Storage Manager -- LSM) and hardware
(RAID Controllers) solutions. For LSM, look at man volintro,
System Admin. Guide, and Logical Storage Manager Guide.
