kernel memory growth

Hi,
We have a dozen alphas running Digital UNIX 3.0b, inter-connected by
a FDDI ring. On three of the machines (2100/A500MP) we have experienced
heavy kernel memory growth up until the point where the machines hang.
Kernel memory was observed to double from ca 35MB to more than 70MB.
All network I/O stops (no mbuf's), no login possible (we use NIS and
NFS-exported home directories) etc etc. We had to reboot. The problem
has occured on machines where the Ethernet interface is disabled.

We have application programs running that might provoke the growth,
but that's just a guess.

I would like to know if anybody out there has had the same problem
and if so, maybe you also know the cause and the solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards,
Tomas Jonasson
