Thanks for the replies. The answer is that no changes are needed.

We are running several 3000/400s and a 3000/600 with the same kernel
without any problems.

As long as you're running a version of Digital UNIX that
supports the newer systems there's nothing to change. And
obviously you are running reasonable version.

        The Models 400, 600, 700, 500, 500X, 800 and 900 are to
Digital UNIX's view of the world, the same system. Minor
details, such as the clock speed and number of TURBOchannel
slots are discovered at boot or handled by the PALcode.

Look at /sys/conf/GENERIC - it has all the hardware types that the
generic kernel supports. The only one that is close to the 3000/400
and 3000/500 is the "DEC3000_500" entry so you should be ok.

We run a number of 3000/400, 3000/600, 200-2/166, 200-4/233 all with a
common /usr

All our 3000/400 and 4000/600 run with identical / partitions
(except rc.config where the hostname has been changed) and we have not seen
any problems.

The other systems need different devices made in /dev.

Our 3000/[46]00 kernel has cpu type 3000_500 ??

Dan, unless you changed something else in the configuration, then you
shouldn't need to change anything in the kernel configuration file.

In fact, all the "Flamingo" and "Sandpiper" variants are called by the
identifier DEC3000_500 in the config file; the difference between the DEC
3000 Model 400 and Model 500 is in the enclosure and the number of TC slots
for TURBOchannel expansion. Otherwise, it's essentially the same board, and
the 600, 800, and 900 share the same basic design and many components, so
that from the perspective of the OS kernel, they're all the same system.
