SUMMARY: Use of LSM with 3rd party disk

My Original query:

Does anyone have any experience or views on using Logical Storage Manager
with 3rd party disks such as segate elite 9 or barracuda 4. I'm interested if
such things as mirroring and striping work. Does LSM use non core SCSI
commands that are supported on DEC disks which are not on some 3rd party ones?

Thanks to those who replied:

Should work flawlessly as long as the striped/mirrored disks are identical
(3rd party disks).

If the drive is well behaved and is compliant to the SCSI-2
specificiation, it should work. I don't think LSM ever uses
any SCSI commands directly. It probably constructs "buf"
structures and hands them off to the underlying driver's
strategy routine to do the I/O. This way it can work with
SCSI devices, MSCP devices and the backplane EISA/PCI RAID
        controllers.

Not me.

Nothing prevents this from working.

No, but in general the problem is that some drives do not properly
support the ANSI SCSI spec properly.

Just curious - why would you go to great lengths to provide data
security, and then try to save a few percent of the system cost to use
unqualified disk drives?
