syslog.dated - when do it switch???

I've got a question, which may be stupid, but it's got me stumped.

When and how does syslog switch dates in the /usr/adm/syslog.dated file? I
don't see any cron entries that do it. Is it done internally in syslogd?
I'll take a guess that a SIGHUP (or a reboot...) to syslogd will cause it,
but who sends that signal?
