The problem was a very basic one: too long SCSI bus. According to the mail
I got, the DEC recommendation is 3 meters, while I had 2,5 m total cables
plus the 2 meters that internal & expansion box devices take. I tested this
by placing the tape drive as first device in the chain and indeed, there
was no problem with it. The disk in the expansion box, being the last
device in the SCSI chain, couldn't be even mounted... so I'm off to the
quest for shorter SCSI cables.
