Subject: SUMMARY - AlphaServer 2100 4/233 info

Firstly I'll correct the machine type, it should have read an AlphaServer
 2100 4/233, sorry about that.

 My original query was :

> We are currently thinking of purchasing an AlphaServer 2000 4/233
> with 2/3 processor cards and 256Mb of RAM to act as a departmental
> server. What would be useful (to clear any doubts about performance,
> etc) would be to share the experiences that others have had with

I had two replies one of which was more of a query, the second did give
 some valuable info.

It'll support approx. 300 interactive dumb terminal users. The only
bottleneck experienced was the network (X.25 in this case).

There was a resounding yes for using RAID and disk stripping.

Finally there was a problem experienced with allocating a large numbers of
small files effectively and efficiently on adfs but no solution alas.

 Many thanks to :

Any more info would be very much appreciated. Especially from those
using X windows in an academic environment.

 Thanks again,
