I asked:

: I've got a new AlphaServer 2100 Model 5/250 onto which I'm trying to
: install OSF/1 v3.2 from the CD-ROM.
: All looks well in the install process and the boot-up messages, but
: when it tries to invoke an X display with the console login window,
: all I get is a mostly white screen with some black pixels...

I heard from several people (most of whom work for DEC) that the new
Model 5/xxx machines *must* run Digital Unix v3.2B (or higher). If
only the software phone support people could have told me that :-P.
Anyway, a 3.2B disk is on its way to me. Thanks to all for your help.
