assertion failure in cmrlc_produce.c

I believe that the following problem was discussed recently in
comp.unix.osf.osf1, but I didn't archive that discussion, and
now somebody in our group has been hit by it. If anyone has
the answer (i.e. the workaround, which I believe somebody from
DEC posted), I'd appreciate a copy.

Anyway, it involves the following (OSF/1 V3.2, DEC Fortran V3.5):

Assertion failed: 0, file ../../../../../../src/usr/ccs/lib/libmld/cmrlc_produce.c, line 864
Fatal error in: /usr/lib/cmplrs/cc/ld IOT/Abort trap
fort: Severe: Failed while trying to link.

I vaguely recall that the problem involved a compiler bug which
caused the compiler to spit out bad code which confused the hell
out of the linker. Or some shortcoming in the linker, making it
incapable of dealing with object files that it ought to be able
to deal with. Or something like that.

Incidentally, the OSF/1 V3.0 linker handles the same set of .o
files just fine.

If anyone saved a copy of the response(s) to this question from
the previous go-around, and would forward {it,them} to me, I'd
be immensely appreciative. Many TIA.
