[Q]uestion: -------------------------------------------------------------

I've got an HP 4mm DAT drive always giving I/O errors. I'm still looking
for the specifics on the drive but I am unable to vdump or use Network
Save and Restore and therefore unable to backup the system. This is a
big problem that needs a quick fix.

Is there a known problem with these drives, I remember reading somthing
about this on a newsgroup awhile back. The drive was orginally on a vax
and had no problems. Should the drive be serviced or replaced?

Other info:
DEC 3000/300LX OSF/1 3.0B Firmware 5.2
HP 4mm DAT TZ?

[A]nswer: ---------------------------------------------------------------

The actually drive is a HPC1533A DDS-2. The original problem was I could
not write to tape I/O error when doing a vdump. Checked length of SCSI
cable < 3m. The only problem may be I need to upgrade the firmware on
the tape drive. Anyone know where I can get the firmware upgrade?

I tried again to backup to tape and it worked on one tape and then not
another and then worked again on another. This leads me to believe the
tape media is at fault.
