Since posting the summary, two more replies arrived in my cybermailbox,
one a "me too" and this from Mike Iglesias <iglesias_at_draco.acs.uci.edu>:

I tried Mike's suggestion and the "corrupted" termcap file problem has
ceased! Thanks for the follow-up, Mike!
