missing "From:"-line in (local) mail

Dear Alpha-Managers,

since a few days we have realized an annoying mail problem under V3.0
Digital Unix/Dec OSF/1.

Our "main" BIND-area here is "mpe-garching.mpg.de" (on a HP-machine)
"Below" that we have a subarea "rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de" (on a dec 3000/400)

Now when a local user sends mail to another user (or me ;) in one of the
following three ways:

1) mail user < filename
2) mail user_at_rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de < filename
3) mail user_at_mpe-garching.mpg.de < filename

then there is no "From:"-line in the mail-headers in the first two ways...
(as seen by directly editing the /var/spool/mail/user - file)
but with version 3) there comes a "From:"-line.

This is true also for the "mailx"-command (and elm and dxmail and exmh...).

Far from being a sendmail-guru or sendmail-expert, i don't know where to
look for the problem or how to see it or how to fix it...

The sendmail.cf-file seems untouched for months at least, but the problem
is new (one or two weeks) and our local mail-hero is not reachable
(It's holidays-time... :<)

Any hints?

Bernt Christandl
