Summary:halt of windows system on console

Here is the question:

And here comes the prompt reply from Dr. Tom Blinn:

        
/sbin/init.d/xdm stop to stop the X Windows System
/sbin/init.d/xdm start to re-start it.

If it's died, you probably will need to do a stop before you do a start so
that the script can clean up some things (like the record of the pid of the
process that's running xdm) before it will restart things.
