vdump/vrestore

I am at a loss to understand how to use vdump & vrestore to restore an ADVfs
fileset to the state it was in at the time of an incremental backup. As far as
I can make out, restoring from an incremental vdump merely brings back all the
files that are new or changed since the base dump. It doesn't redo any delete
or rename operations that were done since the base dump.

This is very bad news indeed. It is often the case that a great deal more
intellectual effort goes into the organisation of files than their actual
contents. I may have spent hours tidying up my filespace, or organising mail
messages into folders (i.e. directories, with MH). Having to repeat all that
work seems to me to defeat the whole purpose of doing incremental dumps.

What I'm looking for is an equivalent of the old "restore" program's "r"
option. This reinstates structural changes by maintaining a symbol table
between runs ("restoresymtab"). I believe that it is more or less impossible
to get it right without such a symbol table.

Please somebody, tell me that I've missed something obvious here...

By the way, the Polycenter Networker product isn't really an option for me,
even in its "single server" form, since I have to integrate vdump into a
pre-existing site-wide backup scheme.
