Thanks to everyone who replied. The original problem was
that after doing su and then exiting, the account to which su had
been done remained as though it was still logged on when you ran
"w". This is a bug in OSF1 v2.0 which was fixed in release 3.0.
Someone pointed out that a patch is available but I do
not know from where to get it.
And finally (thanks Knut), the problem can be avoided
by doing exec su instead of su (which spawns a subshell)
