I'm reluctant to post this because it's so incredibly embarrasing.
My script was creating a standard template for each new entry in the
/tcb/files/auth area. You know, u_name, u_uid, u_succchg, u_pwd, etc.
The observant will have noted that it should be u_id, not u_uid.
Amazing, that.
