Original Question.
Hi. I am working with a Alpha 2100 -- Digital Unix Machine. Currently the
ethernet card is set up to use the AUI port. How do I change it so that it
will select the BNC port?
The Answer I got from Digital.
1. Make sure the jumper is in the right position for BNC. (The jumper on
the card is blue)
2. The value set at the boot prompt
>>> set ewb0_mode Auto_Sensing
Digital said this has not been implemented.
3. When the system boots it still says selecting AUI, but Digital said that
the AUI is for either AUI or BNC.
The Responses I got from this group:

If the 2100 is like our 200/233's, the AUI setting means the BNC port. I
found this tucked away in the User Information book, in the section
Console Commands, where it is talking about the Environment Variables
(ewa0_mode in this case).
Hope this helps.

I have found that with machines that ship recently, there are 2
things that need to be set correctly.
1.) A jumper on the ethernet card controls whether
AUI or BNC can be used, jump rows 1&2 for AUI
and jump rows 2,3 for BNC (read the manual that
came with the 2100, they even have a little diagram)
2.) at the >>> prompt, you need to set the device in the
firmware setup. You can check the current
setting, by typing in show ewa0_mode, then
set ewa0_mode BNC (I think... this too is
mentioned in the hardware manual)
I would try the set ewa0_mode BNC command first
because the factory default setting on the ethernet card
is to enable BNC.
Good Luck,

I have the same machine, but currently OpenVMS. I believe the SRM console
commands are the same. A >>> set ew*0_mode "ethernet_device_type" will be
necessary, where the * is the adapter ID for the ethernet controller ( "a" is
most likely unless you have more than one ethernet controller) and the
ethernet device type is either "aui" or "twisted" or "auto". For BNC or
otherwise known as ThinWire do,
>>> set ewa0_mode auto
then do a
>>> show ewa0_mode
to make sure the setting took properly.
After this, make sure the jumper on the DE435 ethernet controller card is set
for BNC versus TWISTED or AUI. The jumper as I recall is labeled with BNC,
AUI, and Twisted and is a blue multiple pin jumper.
If you don't do both the console command and the jumper things won't work
as expected.

In prom (>>>) modus, give the command:
>>> set ether 1
or was is 0, anyways ....

In the firmware (the ">>>" prompt), check out the EWA0_PORT and
similar environment variables (use SHOW | MORE to see them all).
One of them (don't remember the exact name offhand) can be set to AUI,
TWISTED-PAIR, or (I guess) BNC. It's set to TWISTED-PAIR on our 2100.

I was stumped by this a few days ago. From the system console prompt, >>>,
type set ewa0_mode=bnc. Or whatever the correct syntax is, I think you need
the = sign, perhaps not. Note that if you type set ewa0_mode, it gives
you the valid options to set it too.

Goto console mode
shutdown -h now
enter the following command:
set ewa0_mode bnc
That should do it.

You have to shutdown and halt the CPU to get to the console prompt.
The console command is somthing like
set ether utp
I don't remember the exact command off the top of my head, but it
should be in your hardware user's guide.
good luck

Regards,
You must shutdown your machine and set a variable in boot prom mode (or
perhaps a dipswitch at the back), consult the owner's guide for details.

You have to bring your machine to monitor mode (>>> prompt) with
shutdown -h +3 'Setting Ethernet interface' or the like
Then issue : >>> set ewb0_mode BNC
and boot the system again
I assume here that you configure the SECOND Ethernet interface
ewb0 (bought separately and PCI based in my case) since the built-in
interface (ewa0 in my case) has only one AUI and one TP port.
So, I suppose that your BNC port is on an add-on controller,
if not, change the above command accordingly as reported by a
show config command.
The 2100 Owner's Guide page 4-30 is wrong when saying that value
"aui" is for both AUI and BNC.
Also, I read sometime in this list that auto-sensing was not yet
implemented.
I do not terminate the unused ports (AUI and TP) but I think it's ok
Of course for BNC I have the 50 ohms taps at both ends of the
daisy chain as usual.
