Compiling gcc on OSF 3.0 - Hints?

Greetings,

If anyone out there has ever gotten gcc to compile properly on an
Alpha running OSF 3.0, I would appreciate hearing from you. I can get
it to compile with no errors (the "make compare" doesn't see any
problems), but I have a lot of problems with any program I compile
with regards to the string functions. Perhaps I am accessing a buggy
library in my compiler compile? I made sure /usr/bin was before
/usr/ucb in the PATH, but this did not help.

Specifics: OSF1 V3.0 347 alpha
           gcc 2.6.3
using regular old cc to compile it

Any hints are appreciated, thank you!
