lpr fails to print job

Hello All,

We have encountered a problem with the submission of print jobs using the lpr
command. This problem has recently come about when trying to print files from
inside shell scripts or by using the system() system call to call lpr directly.

The print job does not come out at all when submitted from inside a shell or
program but when the same file is submitted from the command line there are no
reported problems and the print job comes out!

In /usr/adm/sylog.dated/dd-mmm-hh:mm/lpr.log the following lines appear - does
anyone have any idea what they mean. A quick scan through signal(4) shows that
there is no signal -1? And err=0 is good right?

Aug 31 16:26:26 zentral lpd[19278]: pid=23003 (sig=-1,err=0)
Aug 31 16:29:42 zentral lpd[19278]: pid=23117 (sig=-1,err=0)

Configuration Info: Digital UNIX 3.2, AlphaServer 2110 4/250

TIA
