Terminal Control information suddenly vanished

Sometimes (only happens periodically) when I run login from an xterm I get a
message

Terminal Control information suddenly vanished

Wait for login exit ...

but I still log in and the ownership of the tty file doesn't change. I usually
get the "not owner" message on the tty as well. Below is an example. A while
back I ran out of pty's so I created additional dev files and up'ed the rpty
entry in the kernel config. What's happening here?

The system is a dual proc 2100 running V3.2a. I have 512 rpty's created and
configured in the kernel. My apologies if this is in the archive, I don't have
access.

thanks,

dan
