CDE won't let me login

I installed CDE from the OSF/1 V3.2 Feb 1995 CD-ROM on an AlphaStation 400
4/233 today. I didn't allow the installation to run CDE instead of
DECwindows/xdm.

So as the installation stated, I stopped xdm using
        /sbin/init.d/xdm stop
and started cde with
        /sbin/init.d/cde start

A nice looking window appeared and asked me for a username, which I entered.
Then it asked for a password, which I entered. Then it informed me that I
hadn't entered the correct password (or something like that). But I had.
If I chose to go to line mode to login, the username/passwords worked again,
but that wasn't very useful.

What do I need to do to make it let me login?

Thanks.

Greg
