Running xclients without Display hardware

I've got a (curious?) requirement to run an X-application
on my alpha displaying on the same alpha. Unfortunately the
alpha does not have any display hardware - so attempting
to bring up X and/or the X-application fails. X-hosting
the application to another display accross the network - would
work -- but I can not for "system failover reasons". I really
don't need to see the application and it's windows.

Is there any way of tricking the alpha into believing it has a
display w/o the hardware?

Or alternatively can a DEC 5000 - be tricked into
thinking it has a display when it really doesn't have the h/w?

thanks
curtis
