I installed CDE from the OSF/1 V3.2 Feb 1995 CD-ROM on an AlphaStation 400

DECwindows/xdm.
So as the installation stated, I stopped xdm using
/sbin/init.d/xdm stop
and started cde with
/sbin/init.d/cde start
A nice looking window appeared and asked me for a username, which I entered.
Then it asked for a password, which I entered. Then it informed me that I
hadn't entered the correct password (or something like that). But I had.
If I chose to go to line mode to login, the username/passwords worked again,
but that wasn't very useful.
What do I need to do to make it let me login?

I had similar problems. I think that CDE may have a bug which
causes it to not use the enhanced security database. It seems to
use the /etc/passwd file for checking passwords.
I hope this helps you track down the problem. If you find a
solution, be sure to post a summary.

Are you running enhanced security?
If so, CDE's login window does not handle enhanced security.

My bet is that you are using C2 security. This beta release is not
C2 friendly and so is using the password from the /etc/password
file.
I have been assured that this will be fixed for the final release.

Sure enough, it was the enhanced security that was causing the problem. I
decided I just had to see what this thing looked like, so I ran /usr/sbin/setup
chose option 11) Security (BSD/C2),
chose BASE security at the first prompt and
took the defaults for the other 2 options.
Upon exit the system went ahead and copied the appropriate passwords from the
'special' file to the 'normal' file.
After that I could run CDE without any problems. And I ran setup again,
changed the security to the way it was when I was having problems and didn't
even have to reboot.
Thanks for all the quick responses. Sorry for the tardy summary.
